Racer's Etiquette

pig.jpg

Even these little pigs understand the basic courtesies of the race route. If you are new to organized running, please take a moment to read the following guidelines. They will make the run much more enjoyable and safer for everyone.

Before the race:
1. Tie your shoes and double knot them. This prevents tripping or having to stop short to retie them. If they should come loose, move over to the side of the course to retie them. Don't stop suddenly in the middle of the road.
2. Pin your bib on the front of your shirt or shorts where it is visible. DO NOT REMOVE THE PULL TAG. The workers at the finish chute must be able to see your bib and you must turn in your pull tag at the end to ensure proper scoring. Visible race bibs also help race day photographers identify youWink!

At the start:
1. Unless you are running a 5 minute mile pace, DO NOT push to the front and toe the start line. Allow the competitive runners their place at the startline. If you are walking, strolling, just out to enjoy the morning or if the race director has been nice enough to allow you to push your baby jogger, place yourself in the back of the pack.
2. Do not push and shove to get across the start line. Everyone else is moving forward as quickly as they can. The pack will thin out in no time at all and you'll be able to advance your position.

During the race:
1. Always stay to the right side. It is customary to pass runners on their left and, on an out and back course, front-runners will be returning on your left. If you are running with friends and stop for a walk break, do not walk 3 - 4 abreast. Make sure the runners behind you can get around you.
2. If you are ready to pass and can't seem to find a path between runners, call out 'on your left' or 'in between you guys.' The runners will usually yield the path.
3. There are often water tables along the race route. If you would like a cup of water, move in to the right as you approach the table and grab a cup from a volunteer as you run past. You can drink the water on the run or stop just beyond the table to drink it. Do not block the route in front of table while you drink your water. When you are fininshed, try to hit the trash can or at least the area around the can. The water guys are volunteers and will be cleaning up your cups. Remember to thank them.

At the finish:
1. It is perfectly reasonable to sprint past anyone as you approach the chute. It is not reasonable to knock them down. Push yourself, don't push them.
2. If for some reason you were able to run the race as a bandit, DO NOT CROSS THE FINISH LINE. You will hose up the scoring system for everyone.
3. Once across the finish line, move in a timely fashion through the chute. DO NOT PASS anyone in the chute. Now is the time to remove your pull tag and turn it over to the volunteers at the end of the chute.
4. As you cross the finish line, you will see a large clock. This displays the time that you crossed the line. Make a mental note of it. It is being electronically recorded as you finish. The volunteers at the chute do not know your time. If you don't note your own time, you will have to wait for the results to be posted.

IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER! Nearly everyone working this race, from the course marshals to the people working the chute and tabulating the scoring are all volunteers.
If not for them, these wonderful races would not be possible. If you have a complaint or constructive criticism, find the person in charge and politely discuss it with them. And please, consider volunteering yourself at the next race!
